WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?
The philosophy behind permaculture is working with nature, rather than against it... Permaculture is the harmonious integration of landscape and people!
You can apply permaculture to any setting or climate--your garden or farm, urban and suburban homes, community structures, watershed systems, and even to relationships. Sadly, we have disturbed and abused our Mother Earth. Most of the land is in desperate need of drastic rehabilitation and all humans should rethink our ability in helping to recover it.
Applying the principles and ethics of "permaculture" can provide solutions on any scale. When designing or redesigning a home site, a permaculture designer looks for ways to integrate water catchment, existing buildings, and energy systems with tree crops. Landscapes are not your average lawn or as I like to call them "sod farms". They consist of a well thought out forest layer design, creating a lifetime medicinal food forest. Using fruiting trees, fruiting shrubs, fruiting vines, medicinal "weeds" ground covers, herbs, edible/useful perennials, self-seeding annuals and even aquaculture, all help to make up a magnificent supply of medicine, food, and even building materials! Waste products (chop and drop) from plants, compost, manure, urine, are all used as nutrients to benefit other elements in the system and to help rebuild the soil. The whole landscape design is situated to where you can catch water, absorb nutrients, filter toxins, absorb or filter sunlight and even block the wind by creating microclimates. Particular associations of trees, perennial vines, shrubs and ground covers known to nourish and protect one another are clustered together, also known as companion planting. Ponds and other elements are constructed in ways to help their edges take advantage of the biological activity.
Research reveals that Earth utilizes several means to purify itself. If we were to stop interfering with the process and not constantly adding to the problem, it would eventually undergo a process of healing. This holistic approach in helping heal our Mother Earth includes agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development! Working with Nature through a permaculture design system, provides both human and animal healing support; by providing food, medicine, energy, shelter, and other material needs in a sustainable way!
Every life has a purpose in maintaining a balance for this planet. Both animals and human beings are able to live healthier and happier lives with a true understanding to each's life purpose, their role.
Permaculture is truly bringing the world back into a thriving, healthy natural state of being for generations to come!
